Earth Day 2005: An editorial!

A number of years ago [1970] two different groups of people established events to celebrate Earth Day. A group using the spring equinox, March 21. The other celebrates the Earth Day events April 22. So there's a bit 'of confusion, but also a choice as to when to join with others to honor Earth Day.

Every year there are programs and events that you can attend both locally and internationally. My wife and I sometimes trip to New York for the Earth Day Street Fairs These fairs are held closed city blocks. They attract large crowds of people on the street, and I'm really a big party. There is no food and many vendors selling a wide range of products. Also, there are booths with a variety of educational materials and information. The environment is usually the center of these events on Earth Day.

As a shaman, it is my tradition of seeing the Earth as a sacred space. I see it as part of the Great Spirit ...... the body of God This is in contrast with many traditions fighting wars for the 'Holy Lands'. At this point we are all aware that we are all on the same planet, so how can it be a holy place and others not? By modern standards this is no longer meaningful.

One way out of this situation is to come together as the human race and our focus on healing the planet. Earth Day is one such attempt. So why not plan to attend some event or start your own Earth Day traditions in your area?

Post your applications in the calendar of events magazine, or go to the Earth Day Network for a list of international groups and events. You can reach at this address: http://www.earthday.net/
